EMDR R-TEP and G-TEP Training in Nicosia

3–4 May 2023

On 3–4 May 2023, an EMDR R-TEP and G-TEP Training was held in Nicosia, bringing together Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot mental health professionals. The training was delivered by Elan Shapiro, an internationally recognised EMDR trainer and one of the developers of the R-TEP and G-TEP protocols.

The event was organised with the financial support of the EMDR Europe Association, while the Goethe-Institut also contributed to and supported the organisation of the training.

Participants included members of the emerging bicommunal EMDR community in Cyprus, as well as mental health professionals and academics working in the field of trauma. They expressed a strong interest in providing psychosocial support and conducting research with people affected by the 2023 earthquakes, including survivors and refugees who had arrived in Cyprus.

Despite the short preparation period, the training was organised through the dedication and close collaboration of colleagues from both communities. All training materials were translated into Greek and Turkish, enabling participants to engage fully and equally in the programme.

The strong leadership and cooperation demonstrated by the Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot Co-Presidents reflected the shared vision of EMDR Cyprus. The training represented an important step towards building a strong, inclusive and bicommunal professional association committed to overcoming political and social barriers through professional solidarity, mutual respect and the spirit of EMDR.
